The Joy of September

A South African celebration of Spring, renewal and wellbeing

There is something particularly joyful about the arrival of September in South Africa.

The magnificent array of spring flowers begins to transform our landscapes, the migration of whales along our coastline becomes a spectacular natural theatre, and the country begins to awaken from the slower rhythm of winter. Longer days, warmer air and the promise of summer bring with them an unmistakable sense of renewal.

In South Africa, September is traditionally celebrated as the beginning of spring and is also recognised as Tourism Month — a time when we celebrate the extraordinary diversity, beauty and heritage of our country.

As winter gently loosens its hold, travelling through South Africa becomes a pleasure in itself. From our magnificent coastlines and mountains to the vastness of the bushveld, visitors and locals alike are drawn into the richness of our landscape, our cultures and the many languages and traditions that make our country so wonderfully diverse.

This is, after all, the Cradle of Humankind — a country of extraordinary natural heritage, indigenous botanicals and iconic wildlife. The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — remain enduring symbols of the wild beauty that surrounds us.

But spring is not only a change in the landscape. It is a change within us too.

After the cooler, quieter months of winter, our bodies naturally begin to crave movement, light, fresh air and nourishment. We spend more time outdoors, rediscover walking, travelling and socialising, and begin to shed some of the heaviness of winter.

Our skin experiences this seasonal transition too.

The rich creams, oils and comforting rituals of winter give way to lighter layers, gentle exfoliation, hydration and renewed attention to the body. Spring is the perfect time to pause and consider how we care for ourselves — not simply how we look, but how we feel.

Wellness is, after all, not a destination. It is found in the small rituals that bring us back to ourselves.

A warm bath.
A beautifully scented body ritual.
The gentle renewal of an exfoliation.
Moisturising the skin after a long day outdoors.
A quiet moment of stillness.
Time spent in nature.
And the simple pleasure of caring for ourselves.

Perhaps this is why spring has such a natural connection to beauty.

The season reminds us that renewal does not need to be dramatic. Nature simply awakens when the conditions are right — slowly at first, and then seemingly overnight, with colour and life appearing almost everywhere.

South Africa’s spring landscapes are a wonderful example. Dormant seeds respond to changes in temperature, moisture and light, creating an extraordinary but often fleeting biological explosion. In places such as the Cape Floral Kingdom, this transformation can happen within days, reminding us just how remarkable — and precious — our natural environment truly is.

And while climate change is altering seasonal patterns and influencing temperature and moisture cycles, the resilience and beauty of nature remain something worth observing, appreciating and protecting.

Perhaps September therefore offers us a gentle invitation.

To awaken.
To renew.
To breathe more deeply.
To spend more time outdoors.
To nourish our bodies.
To care for our skin.
And to reconnect with the simple rituals that make us feel well.

At Matsimela, we believe beauty and wellness belong together. Our connection to South Africa’s indigenous ingredients — from nourishing marula and baobab to rooibos and aloe ferox — is part of that story: a celebration of the natural richness of our country and the remarkable ingredients that have long been part of African traditions of care.

So let September be more than simply the arrival of spring.

Let it be a celebration of South Africa, nature, beauty, health and wellbeing — and an invitation to embrace the joy of a new season.

After all, spring is nature’s way of reminding us that there is always an opportunity to begin again.

Happy Spring!
