From Necessity to Beauty

When we think of a handbag today, it is easy to see it simply as something we carry every day. Yet the humble bag has travelled an extraordinary journey through history.

Long before handbags became fashion accessories, people needed practical ways to carry food, water, tools and personal belongings. Early bags were fashioned from natural materials available at the time — animal skins, woven grasses, fibres and textiles — with simple straps allowing them to be carried around the waist or across the shoulder.

As civilisation evolved, so did the art of the bag.

Woven fibres, crochet, embroidery and beautifully crafted leather transformed simple containers into objects of creativity and personal expression. Decorative beads, intricate stitching, mother-of-pearl and other embellishments began to reflect wealth, craftsmanship and individuality.

By the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the handbag had firmly entered the world of women’s fashion.

And, of course, what went inside became just as interesting.

Money, a mirror, powder, lipstick, a comb, fragrance and perhaps a little brush for those unexpected moments when one needed to look perfectly composed!

The handbag had quietly become a personal beauty cabinet.

More than something we carry

Today, handbags come in every imaginable shape, material and style — from beautifully understated to bold and artistic.

But perhaps their greatest evolution is that they have become an extension of ourselves.

We carry our necessities, our little luxuries and the things that make us feel prepared and beautiful.

A favourite fragrance.

A nourishing hand cream.

Lip balm.

Something beautifully scented.

A small reminder to pause and take care of ourselves during a busy day.

In this way, the handbag and beauty have always shared something in common: both are deeply personal.

From simple woven pouches to the artistic handbags of today, the journey has been one from necessity to expression, from practicality to pleasure.

And perhaps there should always be room in our handbag — and in our day — for a little beauty.
